Do your bots’ documents feature cross-references or tables of contents?
Do you want to ensure both of these elements automatically update after being generated by your bots according to the automations applied in the Josef Word editor? Here's how!
- To learn how to create cross-references in Microsoft Word, please visit this article.
How it works

Most of the work happens behind the scenes, but here are some things to note.
Within the Josef Word editor
- In the Josef Word editor, cross references display in documents as green variables.
- Builders can insert variables, apply rules, looping etc. to blocks featuring cross-references.
- Builders can also quickly delete cross-references by hitting the backspace key.
- Tables of contents may not appear in the Josef Word editor, but rest assured that they do in generated documents!
- It is not possible to add new cross-references in the Josef Word editor. Therefore, we recommend either
- Finalising your document's cross-references in Microsoft Word before uploading it to Josef, or
- Using Josef's export & re-upload (beta) feature to export and edit your document in Microsoft Word (i.e. insert new cross-references), then re-upload your document back onto Josef.
Once your document's cross-references have been finalised, simply generate a document by testing your bot and that's it! Cross-references and tables of contents in your generated documents will be in line with the automations applied and responses inputted by end-users.
Automations include:
- Duplicated text blocks
- Text rules
- Block rules
- Looping
- Block deletions
